Silvia Trujillano, Destination Specialist for Europe at LimaTours and dedicated to creating unique experiences for travelers eager to discover Peru, recently embarked on an adventure to personally experience the 2-day, 1-night Inca Trail to Machu Picchu—one of the country’s most iconic routes. Through her story, Silvia shares what it was like to take on this challenge, surpassing her own expectations while enjoying the natural beauty and historical richness that only the Inca Trail can offer. We invite you to discover her experience, narrated by herself and filled with details that make this journey truly special:

The adventure began early, starting with the journey from the hotel to the Ollantaytambo station, where we boarded the Vistadome train. It was a trip filled with anticipation; with each passing window, the Andean landscape grew increasingly majestic. Once at the station, we stocked up on essentials: water, sunscreen, and even a hat to shield ourselves from the sun that would accompany us during the hike.

Upon arriving at kilometer 104, we disembarked, greeted by the soothing sound of the Urubamba River. After crossing the bridge, the trail led us to the first ruins of Chachabamba, just a few minutes from our starting point. There, our guide introduced us to the history of this ceremonial site, a place of worship dedicated to water—a vital resource in the Andean worldview. I felt a profound connection to the ancient past come alive.  It was reassuring to know that our guide would pace the journey according to our abilities, reminding us that this hike wasn’t a competition. My sedentary spirit breathed a sigh of relief, and with his constant encouragement, I joined the group at a leisurely pace.

The first part of the hike was an ascent, and although it challenged my endurance, our guide kept us captivated with fascinating stories and legends about the Inca Trail. I felt supported not only by him but also by my fellow hikers, who shared in the effort and excitement of each step. After a while, we arrived at a small waterfall, a peaceful spot where the crystal-clear water and lush greenery created an atmosphere of tranquility. We stopped there to rest and take some photos; the fresh water seemed to renew our energy, preparing us for the next stretch toward Wiñayhuayna.

The climb toward Wiñayhuayna was a greater challenge, but upon arrival, every effort was rewarded. This archaeological site, whose name means "Forever Young" in Quechua, stood with green terraces and breathtaking views of the mountains. There, I met an older couple from another group, and the woman, despite the difficulty, caught up with us and, with a tired smile, told us she had counted no fewer than 322 stone steps to reach that point. Looking down, I understood the magnitude of her achievement—and ours as well.

We continued the hike to the final camp of the Inca Trail, where several groups were resting before continuing. This camp is the last stop for those completing the full 4-day, 3-night trek, and some were taking the afternoon to visit the nearby waterfall. We took the opportunity to enjoy our box lunch and recharge our energy.

Then, the guide told us about the dreaded "spider stairs" or "killer stairs," which immediately stirred a bit of anxiety in me. When I saw them, I immediately understood where the name came from: they were tall, almost vertical stone steps that required both hands and feet to climb. With each step, I focused on looking straight ahead, avoiding glancing at the sheer drop. It was an intense physical challenge, but the reward awaited us at the top. Finally, after those stairs, we reached the Inti Punku, the famous Sun Gate. There it was—Machu Picchu, spread out before my eyes, bathed in soft light that made every stone of its ancient walls shine. It was one of those moments that are etched into the soul forever.

After taking photos and a brief rest, we descended to enter the citadel and explore the Panoramic Circuit (1-B), which offered us the iconic view of Machu Picchu from the upper terrace. From that angle, we could capture the classic postcard shot we all know: a majestic perspective that encapsulates the grandeur of Inca architecture.  After such a fulfilling day, we headed to the buses to descend to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), our bodies tired but our hearts full of memories.

Upon arriving at the hotel in Aguas Calientes, I picked up my bag, which had been transported by train from kilometer 104 to lighten the load during the hike. I took a well-deserved shower, rested my feet, and once I had recovered, I ventured out to explore the town. The Urubamba River accompanied my steps as I wandered through its lively streets, with restaurants and artisan markets reflecting the vibrant essence of this place, nestled among lush green mountains.

The next day, we returned to Machu Picchu at 8 in the morning to begin the Royal Circuit (3-B). This slower-paced tour allowed us to explore the urban area of the citadel, where we visited the House of the Inca and the imposing Temple of the Condor. With every step, the structures seemed to come to life, as if their walls held the secrets of centuries gone by.

With one last look at the citadel, we boarded the Vistadome train, which took us back to Ollantaytambo. Every landscape that passed by the window was a reminder of the grandeur of this land and the unforgettable experience I had just lived.

This journey along the Inca Trail was more than just an excursion; it was a journey into the past and a test of endurance that left a profound mark on each of us. From the stillness of the Chachabamba ruins to the awe-inspiring arrival at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, every step connected us with the grandeur and mysticism of the Incas. In the end, it was not only a physical challenge but a journey that allowed us to discover our inner strength and the power of wonder in the face of one of the most iconic places in the world. Without a doubt, it is an experience I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life.
